Balanced Line Current Driver

The balanced line current driver depicted in the drawing provides an active constant-current sink T4 in the emitter circuit of line driver T3.

Attention is directed to the circuitry in the drawing enclosed by the broken line. The active transistor T4 provides a constant-current sink for all voltage levels at node A. Resistor R5 determines the magnitude of current through T4. Resistor R6 is connected to -V1.

Potential -V1 has a magnitude equal to the midpoint of the voltage swing at node B. Thus a balance is achieved between current flowing from node A to node B when A is more positive than B, and the current flowing from node B to node A when A is more negative than B.
