Two patterns are compared by correlation scanning. To this end the master pattern is divided into a number of subareas which are sequentially imaged on to the plane of the pattern to be correlated and scanned across this pattern.

In the path of the imaging rays an electro-optical light deflector is provided which imparts to the images of each subarea of the master pattern, a cycle of fast and small oscillatory movements consisting of translation in the x and y directions, as well as of small rotational movements. During each cycle of these oscillatory movements, the correlation of each subarea of the master pattern with the corresponding subarea of the other pattern is examined.

Thus a correlation between patterns can be detected when some or all of the subareas (subpatterns) of one patter are displaced or rotated by given amounts to the subarea (subpattern) of the other pattern.
