Abstract

It has been discovered that certain pyrazoline containing compositions are photochromic, in the sense that they produce a visibly colored image directly upon exposure to radiation. In particular, coating or saturation of common office paper and other materials (i.e., glass, metals, etc.) with these formulations produces a highly sensitive media for nonimpact, beam addressable, printing and/or copying applications.

Photochromism of Pyrazoline Compounds

It has been discovered that certain pyrazoline containing compositions are photochromic, in the sense that they produce a visibly colored image directly upon exposure to radiation. In particular, coating or saturation of common office paper and other materials (i.e., glass, metals, etc.) with these formulations produces a highly sensitive media for nonimpact, beam addressable, printing and/or copying applications.

This effect has been observed for 1-phenyl 3-p-diethylamino styril-5-p- diethylamino phenyl pyrazoline, and 1-P-methoxy phenyl 3-p-diethylamino styryl- 5-p-diethylamino phenyl pyrazoline when combined with carbon tetrabromide in the following solvents: Methyl ethyl ketone, chloroform, epichlorohydrin, 1,2 - dichloroethane, 1,4 - dichlorobutane and others. Typical formulations are: 1 part carbon tetrabromide. 2 parts pyrazoline. 97 parts solvent.

These formulations exhibit sensitivity (for an optical density of 1.0) of at least 2 mjoules/cm/2/ at 441.6 nm. The coatings can be desensitized (for archival purposes) by thermal fixing.

In addition, other sensitizing materials, rather than carbon tetrabromide, can be used. These include: dichloroacetone and tribomoethanol.

Also, certain resins such as chlorinated polyphenyl resin, nitro-cellulose and polyester can be used in place of the above sensitizers.
