Shared Technology for Printing and Display

Printing and display apparatus is shown which utilizes the same transducer, logic, power supply, buffer memory, and transducer carriage for both printing and display.

In the printing mode the laser array 10, collection lens 12 and writing lens 14 are scanned across the record member 18 at a suitable speed. Lens 14 provides an image on the transfer ribbon 16 to produce printing on the paper 18. In the display mode the laser array 10 and lens 12 are moved to position 20. The laser beam is scanned by oscillating mirror 22 across writing lens 24, which causes the image to be scanned across display cell 26. Writing is accomplished by stepping the display cell 26 one line at a time in the orthogonal direction during the flyback of the writing beam.

A dichroic mirror 28 is positioned in the optical path before the display cell 26. This mirror reflects the laser beam onto the display cell, but is transparent to light from lamp 30 which, together with lens 32, projects an enlarged image of display cell 26 onto a suitable objection screen.
