Microcode Controlled Event Recording

In data processing systems it is useful for diagnostic and other purpose to be able to monitor and record various status signals while the system is running in its normal control mode.

In a microprogrammed system utilizing erasable microcode, this function can be accomplished efficiently by loading selected event recording microcode which links automatically into the ordinary functional microcode of the system, and provides for the recording of selected status signals concurrent with ordinary functional operation of the system.

The status signals may be conveniently recorded in unused/idle locations of writable control storage. This variable "subspace" may be cyclically overwritten so that it operates effectively as a pushdown stack, to provide a dynamic listing of only the most recently occurring events. The size of the list may be tailored to the available subspace capacity.
