Spindle for Flexible Membranes

Spindle A is provided with concentric grooves a, each of which is adapted to receive a flexible membrane g for holding the membranes spaced with respect to each other.

The grooves a each has a tapered side surface d, a radially extending surface c and a cylindrical root surface j. The membranes g may be magnetic disks, for example, of very thin flexible material each having a hole k therein. The minor diameter b of the grooves a and defined by the cylindrical surfaces i equals the diameter of the holes k of disks g.

The disks g may be moved upwardly on spindle A in direction B one-by-one to position the disks in succeeding grooves a, starting with the uppermost groove
a. Each of the disks are bent against the inherent flexibility of the thin material of the disks, as the disk is moved in direction B into its groove a.

The disks g when installed in their grooves a rest on the surfaces j and c. The disks may be bonded to spindle A by resilient bonds h in grooves a to secure the disks in the proper axial relationship. The spacing e of surfaces c is that which is required for the particular configuration of disks g that is desired.

Spindle A is provided with a plurality of equally spaced longitudinally extending slots f in its periphery, and these slots provide air passages between the inner surfaces of the slots f and the inner edges of the disks g providing the holes k.
