Sheet Inverter

This sheet turnaround device, or inverter, changes the leading edge of a sheet while subjecting the sheet to harmonic motion reversing, and while continuously engaging the surface of the sheet with a drive means.

The figure shows a side view of the sheet inverter. The sheets enter the device while traveling along path 10. Guide plates 11 and 12 stabilize the sheet's leading edge. If the sheet is not to be reversed, deflector 13 is lowered so that its surface 14 is in alignment with guide plate 12. In this event, the sheet exits at 15, between guide plates 16 and 17 and drive rollers 44 and 45 without a change in the leading edge.

If a sheet is to be reversed, deflector 13 is raised to the elevated position, as shown. In this position, surface 18 thereof guides the sheet's leading edge down into the turnaround apparatus as the sheet is driven by drive rollers 40 and 41. The sheet's leading edge first engages spring finger 19, causing it to rotate about pivot 20. This rotation actuates a switch, not shown, which in turn actuates a motor, not shown. This motor operates to rotate shaft 21, and crank arm 22, at a constant speed, 360 degrees clockwise from the position shown.

The crank arm drives crank link 23. Link 23 reciprocates gear rack 24. This gear rack engages rotary gear 34, causing the gear to rotate counterclockwise during the first 180 degrees rotation of crank arm 22, and causing the gear to rotate clockwise during the second 180 degree rota...
