The figure shows an arrangement for inserting a magnetic tape cartridge 1 into and removing it from a magnetic tape unit 12.

Within magnetic tape cartridge 1, magnetic tape 2 is fed from supply spool 3 to take-up spool 4. Magnetic tape 2 is moved along by endless transfer belt 5, which is driven by pinch roller 6 over the circumferences of the supply spool 3 and take-up spool 4.

In the direction of arrow 11, magnetic tape cartridge 1 is inserted, along guide bars 14 and 15, into magnetic tape unit 12. Leaf springs 13 force magnetic tape cartridge 1 against guide bars 14 and 15. At the end of the guide bars, magnetic head 16 is forced against magnetic tape 2 through an aperture 8 in magnetic tape cartridge 1.

In this position of tape cartridge 1, drive capstan 13 of magnetic tape unit 12 extends through aperture 8 of magnetic tape cartridge 1 and presses against pinch roller 6, which is permanently connected to transfer belt 5 via a carrier roll, not shown. Drive capstan 19 together with the motor is permanently fixed to carrier plate 18, which is pivotably and flexibly mounted on the frame of magnetic tape unit 12 via pivoting axis 20 and tension spring 21.

On both sides of lateral edges 9 of magnetic tape unit 12 locking pawls 22 are arranged. One locking pawl 22 is shown in greater detail in Fig. 2. Upon insertion of magnetic tape cartridge 1 into magnetic tape unit 12, lateral edges 9 of magnetic tape cartridge 1 slide along flanks 26 of retaining elements 23, causing the latter to be moved upward or downward by bending spring elements
24. When magnetic tape cartridge 1 has reached the end of guide bars 14, 15, cams 27 of retaining elements 23 engage locking recesses 10 along lateral edges 9 of magnetic tape cartridge 1.
