Abstract

A magnetic ink jet stream 10 projected from nozzle 11 connected to a pressurized ink source 12, is converted to a continuous stream of uniformly-spaced drops 13 by a drop generator 14. The individual drops 13 are selectively diverted vertically or horizontally relative to the stream trajectory, by magnetic selector 15 having a plurality of electric coils 16 - 19.

A magnetic ink jet stream 10 projected from nozzle 11 connected to a pressurized ink source 12, is converted to a continuous stream of uniformly- spaced drops 13 by a drop generator 14. The individual drops 13 are selectively diverted vertically or horizontally relative to the stream trajectory, by magnetic selector 15 having a plurality of electric coils 16 - 19.

Undiverted drops 13, as well as drops diverted vertically, are distributed by magnetic drop deflector 20 energized by a periodic scan signal from source 21, for deposition in accordance with a predetermined pattern on a relatively movable record medium 22. Horizontally-deflected magnetic ink drops continue on a flight path to gutter 23 where they are collected and returned to the ink source.

As seen in Fig. 2, the magnetic selector 15 comprises a two-branch structure to provide in-line gaps 15a and 15b on opposite sides of the trajectory of the droplet 13. Vertical deflection of drops 13 is obtained upwardly in the direction of the arrow by combined energization of coils 16 and 18. Downward vertical deflection is obtained by combined energization of coils 17 and 19.

Horizontal deflection is obtained by the combined operation of the coil pair 16, 17 or by the coil pair 18, 19. A third possibility of diagonal deflection of the magnetic ink drop 13 is possible by energizing individually the coils 16 - 19, or by combinations of coils 16 - 19.
