The system illustrated enables two motors to achieve synchronization with each other, and then maintain the same speed over an indefinite period of time.

The system includes motor 1 as a reference motor, running at a constant reference speed. Grating 1 provides channel 1 of revolution detector 1 with information concerning the speed of motor 1. This information is fed to speed control logic 1 and power pulses are delivered to motor 1 by line 10, when required, to keep the motor speed within acceptable speed limits. Channel 2 of detector 1 provides pulse outputs indicative of motor 1 position and speed to master control (comparator) logic 11.

When it is desired to bring motor 2 into synchronization with motor 1 from a dead stop or from a velocity other than nominal velocity, master control logic 11 by line 12 causes motor 2 to run at a speed less than the nominal velocity of motor 1. Detector 2 provides speed pulses and revolution detect pulses to motor control logic 11 in a similar manner to that of detector 1.

The timing between the pulses from revolution detector 1 and revolution detector 2 is monitored by master control logic 11. When these two pulse outputs are within an acceptable time window of each other, the speed of motor 2 is increased to 100% of its nominal velocity. Under ideal conditions, once synchronization is achieved there is no variation of the timing between revolution detector 1 pulses and revolution detector 2 pulses.
