Abstract

In this communications system, a base station begins communication with a remote station by polling a subgroup that is made up of a few of the remote stations. The members of the subgroup are addressed by a single address within the polling message. If no member of the subgroup responds to the polling message, the base station then polls the next subgroup. Any member of the subgroup that needs service from the base station begins its transmission immediately after receiving the polling message, and without further control messages between the base station and the remote station.

Polling Method Using Subgroups of Polled Stations

In this communications system, a base station begins communication with a remote station by polling a subgroup that is made up of a few of the remote stations. The members of the subgroup are addressed by a single address within the polling message. If no member of the subgroup responds to the polling message, the base station then polls the next subgroup. Any member of the subgroup that needs service from the base station begins its transmission immediately after receiving the polling message, and without further control messages between the base station and the remote station.

When each subgroup has about four members, the polling operation proceeds at high speed in the operation just described, and only a small portion of the polling responses involve contention between two or more members of a subgroup.

Sometimes two or more members of a subgroup will begin transmitting a message to the base station simultaneously in response to the polling message. The resulting messages are garbled and the base station recognizes that contention for service has occurred. The base station then transmits its next normal message (which may be addressed to a different remote station) with a selected bit position set to control each station to cease transmission.

When the contending remote stations have stopped transmitting, the base station begins a conventional slow-poll operation to select a single station to transmit. In the...
