Abstract

Enclosures or covers for impact printers having a forms feeding platen usually have an opening to accommodate the platen shaft, which extends outwardly to the sides of the enclosure to facilitate manual operation without opening the enclosure. The openings for the projecting platen shaft reduce the effectiveness of the enclosure for containing noise generated by the printer. Shaft seals adapted to be frictionally inserted into the enclosure openings reduce the noise level of the printer.

Enclosures or covers for impact printers having a forms feeding platen usually have an opening to accommodate the platen shaft, which extends outwardly to the sides of the enclosure to facilitate manual operation without opening the enclosure. The openings for the projecting platen shaft reduce the effectiveness of the enclosure for containing noise generated by the printer. Shaft seals adapted to be frictionally inserted into the enclosure openings reduce the noise level of the printer.

A partial view of the printer enclosure 10 is shown in Fig. 1. Platen shaft 11, Fig. 2, projects from each side of enclosure 10 into knob shafts 14. Knobs 12 are attached to shaft 11 at each end to enable manual rotation thereof. Opening 13 in enclosure 10 is fitted with seal 20 as seen in Fig. 2.

Seal 20 is circular and contains an annular groove 21 which holds seal 20 in enclosure 10. Cone 22 is an integral part of seal 20 and has a circular opening at the apex substantially the diameter of knob shaft 14. The base of cone 22 is open. By the arrangement described, an effective noise seal is provided.
