Bubble State Discriminator

A bubble state discriminator having a ratchet pattern associated with a conductor is shown in the figure.

A channel or groove, shaped as shown, is designed such that the bubble remains within the channel for the drive fields applied. The figure indicates the direction of travel of a "0" and "1" state for a gradient field in the y direction. The gradient field can be supplied either by a single broad conductor or by two conductors, as shown. In the latter case, the two conductors can also be used to supply a bias field.

A bubble at position A is moved to position B by the application of a gradient field in the y direction. When the gradient is reversed, a 1 state bubble returns to point A and a 0 state bubble moves to point C because point 1 of the ratchet "lags" point 2. The conductor D can be used to apply an advancing or retarding field which tunes the ratchet. If the discriminator is used as a wall state detector, the 1 bubble is annihilated and the 0 bubble is brought to a detector.
