Magnetic Tape Cartridge Inspection System

U. S. Patent 3,631,971 describes a magnetic tape cartridge. In that cartridge, a wide magnetic tape is attached at one end to a spool within a cartridge and at its other end to the lid of the cartridge. Thus the tape is in the form of a loop when the cartridge is assembled.

For inspection testing and measurement purposes it is desirable that handling of the tape be minimized. An inspection system has been devised. It holds and supports the body of the cartridge and applies pressure to the outer spool flanges, allowing them to be freely rotated. The lid of the cartridge is then detached from the cartridge while maintaining one end of the tape attached to the lid.

The system includes a holder for captivating the lid and drawing it and the attached tape away from the cartridge and across a flat surface until the entire tape, or any portion required, is unspooled. The flat surface includes a scale adjacent to the tape path for measuring or locating the tape.

In its extended position the tape can be inspected visually, optically, magneto-optically, or by development with fine magnetic particles, and photographed as the needs of the inspection require. Any or all of these operations require a minimum of manual handling of the tape.

When inspection is completed, a reeling device in the cartridge holder allows the tape to be completely respooled. The lid is then reattached and the cartridge removed from the device.
