Alternate Tab Controls for Typewriter

This typewriter incorporates manually settable tabulation stops and further includes additional controls for automatically setting the tabulation stops.

Typewriter 11, such as that disclosed in U.S. Patent 3,346,091, includes a manually settable tab stop mechanism and a manually settable tab clear mechanism. A convertor 13 is coupled to the typewriter 11 to convert the mechanical movement of the key levers of the typewriter into electrical signals which are stored in the line storage unit 15. Upon completing a type line, the information in line storage unit 15 is transferred to page storage unit 17 where it is retained for subsequent playout. By depressing a record tab mode keybutton 19, typewriter 11 is caused to effect a carrier return to the left margin without index.

Line storage unit 15 is cleared and the set of tab stops selected by the operator is then recorded therein. Thus, a tab clear operation followed by space codes and tab set codes, as keyed by the operator, creates a stored set of codes in the line storage unit 15, which are transferred to the page storage unit 17 upon the completion of the operation. These codes include a set tab code followed by a tab clear code followed by space and tab codes.

When the information in the page storage unit 17 is thereafter used to cause the automatic playout of information on the typewriter 11, each previously stored line is sequentially accessed in the order of storage, each...
