The surface of a magnetic head housing riding on an air film at a minimal distance above a magnetic medium has a complex plural-radius contour. Apparatus and methods are required to repeatedly reproduce such contours without variation from sample-to-sample, or to vary one specified parameter in developing advanced head configurations.

The spherical wasp-waist shaped contour of the head is formed by contact with an abrasive means or lap plate 17, with which one point of the head surface 3 is in contact at all times. The contact point of the head surface 3 is controlled to move along a longitudinal arc 9 of a longitudinal radius RL.

For each increment along the longitudinal arc, a different arc 11, 13, 15 transverse thereto is defined by a variable transverse radius Rt1, Rt2, Rt3. The point of contact between the head surface 3 and lap plate 17 moves along each transverse arc in sequence from one end of the longitudinal arc to the other and back again, until the desired shape and depths are achieved.
