Corona Flat Cable Treatment

The drawings show a machine for treating flat cable 1. The treatment of. the cable 1 consists of subjecting the surface of the cable to a corona ozone atmosphere.

If TEFZEL* coated cable is subjected to corona of sufficient intensity for a sufficient time, the surface of the material will be altered in away that makes it possible to apply the hot melt and have it adhere. This treatment changes the energy level of the surface of the material by oxidation or rearrangement.

Cable 1 is supplied in rolls on a reel 2. The machine consists of a high- voltage generator 3, a cable drive mechanism 4 and associated guides 5, drums 6a, 6b having electrodes 7a, 7b and insulator rings 8a, 8b defining corona treatment enclosures 9, exhaust system 10 and exhaust connections 11. There will be one high-voltage generator 3.

The cable drive 4 consists of two sets of pinch rollers 15, 16.

One set supplies drag on the cable to keep it taut, the other set supplies the drive. Both drums 6a, 6b are free wheeling. One motor 17 supplies drive to the cable. A second motor 18 supplies drive to the take-up reel 19. As cable 1 is driven from between the drive rolls 15, 16, the take-up reel 19 winds it up. The drive rolls are direct coupled to a motor. Both motors are direct current, variable-speed motors. The amount of cable straightening is limited to whatever the tensile force around an 18 inch diameter drum will achieve.

Material for the pinch rolls 15, 16 must resist decomposing due to ozone. The rolls are adjusted with a gap such that as the cable 1 passes between the rolls, the compression of the materials yields a frictional force in excess of 10 pounds.

The corona treatment chamber 9 consists of electrodes 7a. 7b, the drums 6a, 6b insulator rings 8a, 8b and a cover 20 which confines the treatment area. The corona treatment chamber 9 has an air gap 21 between the insulator rings and electrodes. This chamber is as long and as wide as the electrode.
