This pneumatic device is to detect misplaced card components and equalize the test probe force while nodal measurement card testing.

Referring to Fig. 1, the device comprises an approach backer air cylinder 10 having a suitable piston that is connected to a backer clamp air cylinder 11, which has a piston connection to a backer plate 12 slideably mounted on rods 13 secured to a stationary support member 14. The backer plate 12 has projecting portions 15 which are arranged to fit into the spaces between components 16 when the components are correctly located on a card 17. The card is mounted in upper and lower rotatable card locator guides 18 and 19.

When air pressure is applied to the approach backer cylinder 10, the clamp backer cylinder piston and backer plate 12 are moved toward the card 17 being tested. If the projections 15 on the backer plate 12 come in contact with a misplaced card component 16, the approach cylinder 10 is stalled short of its full stroke and no damage results to the misplaced components 16, because of the low force that is applied. This stalled position of the cylinder 10 is sensed by an external electrical system, and air pressure is applied to the pneumatic device to return the piston and assembly back to their original position.

Assuming that all of the components 16 are correctly located on the card 17, when the backer plate 12 is operated it senses no misplaced components...
