The apparatus for displaying color images lacking specified color content comprises:

1) A mechanism for receiving the image instructions which may lack specified color content.

2) A means for displaying color images in response to the image instructions and modal states of the display processor.

3) A mechanism (e.g., an interrupt) for changing/selecting/setting the modal state of the display processor during image processing in realtime. It is observed that no subsequent restorage of color information is contemplated. However, what is contemplated is the provision of an interrupt mechanism providing for color coding segments of the image stream for display purposes under operator control.

The figure shows a color display system with a display processor (interruptible emulator running on a minicomputer) driving the color display. The emulator responds to both operator controlled inputs and image instructions sent from the host computer. Also, clearly this same technique can be applied to graphic attributes other than color - say, line width, style, type font, etc.

Many display terminals have poor contrast ratio and no programmable intensity levels or color capability. This description shows how programs written to display images on such terminals can display their images on a specially equipped color display system, and then exhibit greatly enhanced information display characteristics.
