A matrix-addressing technique is described for practice of the technology described in the IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin, Vol. 18, No. 7, December 1975, pages 2356 to 2359. A respective depletion-layer transducer is utilized to introduce each of the information radio-frequency acoustic signals into the piezoelectric crystal. A depletion layer transducer is described in "The Depletion Layer Transducer" by D. L. White, Transactions on Ultrasonic Engineering, July 1962, pp.21-27.

A respective depletion-layer transducer is utilized to introduce each of the information radio-frequency acoustic signals into the piezoelectric crystal. A three-dimensional bulk storage system is proposed in the above-mentioned Technical Disclosure Bulletin article with potentially a density of 10/9/ bits/in/3/. (Background information on the phenomenon thereof is presented in Physical Review Letters, Vol. 31, No. 13, 24 Sept. 1973, pp 819-522.) It is also described therein that an electrostrictive transducer, e.g., SrTiO(3) or ferroelectric ceramic could be used for the gating electrodes, in order to achieve such a high density. For such a high-density system, approximately 10/6/ gating electrodes per square inch are needed.

A matrix addressing scheme is described herein to make the large number (approx 10/6//in/2/) of the input/output leads easily manageable. It is further proposed herein to use the concept of the depletion-layer transducer by applying a local field, so that a selection can be achieved for the local piezoelectric effect.

Fig. 1 shows the proposed matrix addressing scheme for the 3-D bulk storage system. A total of only 20 external lines will be needed to do the addressing for 10/6/ cells. The utilization of a depletion-layer transducer to implement the matrix address is outlined through F...
