Intermodular Cooling

An air pressure differential to create cooling air movement through two enclosed electronics modules is provided by a single fan at an interface between the modules.

Modules 1 and 2 house electronic circuitry such as printed-circuit boards, power supply components, etc. Axial fan 3 is mounted inside module 1 adjacent duct 5 of module 1. Air movement from module 1 into module 2 is provided through duct 5 into duct 6 of module 2. Flexible shroud 4 provides a seal between ducts 5 and 6 which prevents dust entry into the modules, allows easy separation of the modules for servicing, and prevents the transmission of vibration from one module to the other.

Air flow is then provided into module 1 through openings 7, through fan 3 and ducts 5 and 6 into module 2, and out through openings 8 in module 2. Placement of fan 1 at the interface of the modules facilitates fan efficiency by distributing air flow resistance upstream and downstream of the fan.
