Engraving Tool

Improved accuracy is obtained on a pantographic type engraving machine by supporting the master on a positioning fixture, which has an adjustment capability at the same ratio as the movement of the follower wand bears to the engraving tool.

In the figure, a base plate 1 has a pair of sectors 2 thereon, pivotally mounted at 3. The base plate 1 also has a pair of brackets 4, each of which supports a micrometer adjusting tool 5 which, in turn, bear against corresponding blocks 6 fixed to the sectors 2. The supporting holder 7 for the engraving master is located at a distance from pivot 3 in the ratio that the follower wand 8 bears to the movement of the engraving tool 9. For example, this ratio may be a 10 to 1 reduction and the pitch radii of the master holder 7 would thus be ten times size. The fixture allows accurate adjustment since any advancement or retraction of the micrometers 5 is on a ten to one reduction.

The fixture may also include a compression spring 10 to eliminate play and sector locks 11 for maintaining the sectors 2 accurately located. In addition, a calibration plate 12 with a center line pickup can be removably placed on the fixture for zeroing the follower wand 9.
