Generation of a stepped square waveform is described having the same root-mean-square (RMS), peak and average values as a sine wave, and has application as a standby supply for AC operated equipment.

Fig. 1 shows a waveform having these properties when t1/T and V1/VO have the values shown. The value of t2 may be between 0 and T-t1.

Fig. 2 shows a circuit for generating this waveform with two invertors in series, one supplying a square waveform of period 2T and the other having the same period but pulse length tl. The invertors may each consist of a pair of switching transistors driving a center tapped transformer primary, with the secondary windings serially connected.
