Abstract

A matrix impact printer using a denser matrix that permits a wider latitude in the style of characters printed is achieved, using a pair of print heads disposed on opposite sides of the document being printed. The centers of the print wires in each head are offset vertically to cause each head to print alternate horizontal rows within the character matrix. The vertical rows of wire print elements are also offset in a horizontal direction, so that wires in one column are not called upon to print at the same time as the print wires in any other column.

A matrix impact printer using a denser matrix that permits a wider latitude in the style of characters printed is achieved, using a pair of print heads disposed on opposite sides of the document being printed. The centers of the print wires in each head are offset vertically to cause each head to print alternate horizontal rows within the character matrix. The vertical rows of wire print elements are also offset in a horizontal direction, so that wires in one column are not called upon to print at the same time as the print wires in any other column.

Each head provides not only print wires, but also presents a platen area which confronts the print wires of the head disposed at the opposite side of the document. A ribbon is used only on the side of the document on which the printed characters are to be formed.

This structure allows dots to be printed in a vertical row with each dot overlapping each adjacent dot, and further allows the use of diverging paths from the wire ends forming the dots to the cooperating magnet driving the wire.

The figure illustrates an exemplary form of the structure described above, wherein the print heads are shown in the same plane (one being turned 180 degrees and displaced horizontally) with a matrix of print position centers therebetween aligned with the respective print wire tips.
