Previous devices frequently do not operate in high temperature-low humidity conditions, due to a high rate of water loss before the ink can flow into the residue storage tank. The sticky residue builds up and also collects paper dust that will eventually bridge the stream opening in the collector plate, thus causing machine failure.

Fig. 1 illustrates an ink jet printer having an ink jet head assembly 1 directing drops 2 toward a document 3 for printing. Unused drops go to gutter 4. Fog is collected by collector plate 5 having a tank portion 5a, drop aperture 5b and mesh surface 5c, plate 5 being shown according to one version in Fig. 2. Plate 5 may be disposable.

A device such as that illustrated reduces water loss sufficiently to allow the ink to flow to the storage tank 5a. This is done by keeping the surface of the collector plate 5c covered with a thin layer of non-volatile oil, which has the ability to form a layer of the oil over the ink droplets as they impinge upon the collector 5c.
