Abstract

Described is a unique way of forming the leads of a magnetic reed switch so that mounting posts and spacers are unnecessary: this form is illustrated in the figures. Rather than having conventional 90 degree bends down towards the circuit board for insertion, the leads 10 bend out to the sides of the switch in order to make the switch stand upright and be stable. The switch legs 12 are each offset from the switch center line so that there is a leg-to-leg offset. This allows the switch to mount in printed-circuit boards with the standard one-tenth inch center-to-center hole offset spacing.

Described is a unique way of forming the leads of a magnetic reed switch so that mounting posts and spacers are unnecessary: this form is illustrated in the figures. Rather than having conventional 90 degree bends down towards the circuit board for insertion, the leads 10 bend out to the sides of the switch in order to make the switch stand upright and be stable. The switch legs 12 are each offset from the switch center line so that there is a leg-to-leg offset. This allows the switch to mount in printed-circuit boards with the standard one-tenth inch center-to-center hole offset spacing.

Shown also is a part 14 of the lead 10, which folds back under or is perpendicular to the switch and lies flat against the top of the board. This part 14 serves to control the height of the switch above the board and eliminates the need for a spacer under the reed bottle.

The leads finally turn down so that the switch can be inserted into a printed- circuit board. These leads are of a sufficient length so that the switch can be flow soldered to the circuit board during assembly. The flexibility of the leads provides the spring force necessary to hold the switch in the board during soldering and eliminates the need for a fixture.
