Bidirectional Torque Limiter

This torque limiter consists of three parts, input sleeve 10 such as a timing pulley, output arbor 12 and helical close wound spring 14.

Spring 14 is interference wrapped on output arbor 12, the interference being such as to deliver a predetermined amount of torque when a force is applied to either surface 16 or 18.

Counterclockwise torque is transmitted to output arbor 12 from input sleeve 10 through spring 14 when sleeve surface 20 contacts spring surface 16. Note that when that occurs, sleeve surface 22 separates from spring surface 18.

Clockwise torque is transmitted to output arbor 12 from input sleeve 10 through spring 14 when sleeve surface 22 contacts spring surface 18.

When the output torque exceeds the limit established by interference moment of spring 14 on output arbor 12 then slippage will occur, thereby limiting output torque.
