Abstract

This spiral scanner is configured to simultaneously scan and print in four segments. Each of the printers 1, 2, 3 or 4 is paired with a spiral 11A, 11B, 11C, or 11D (Fig. 2), respectively. A line scan of the image to be spiral scanned is projected onto slit aperture 10, spiral scanning disk 12 in Fig. 1 has 4 spirals 11A through 11D.

This spiral scanner is configured to simultaneously scan and print in four segments. Each of the printers 1, 2, 3 or 4 is paired with a spiral 11A, 11B, 11C, or 11D (Fig. 2), respectively. A line scan of the image to be spiral scanned is projected onto slit aperture 10, spiral scanning disk 12 in Fig. 1 has 4 spirals 11A through 11D.

The pattern of the spirals on the disk 12 and the width of the photodetector segments 1 through 4 are shown in Fig. 2. As the scanning disk 12 rotates, each of the spirals cooperates with the slit aperture 10 to move a scan spot outwardly along the slit. At any given time each spiral is associated with one of the photodetectors. During a complete revolution of a scanning disk 12, the intersection of each spiral with the stationary slit 10 moves radially outward from photodetector 4 through detector 3, detector 2 to detector 1.

Each of the spiral apertures 11 is a different color filter. 11A is a black/white aperture, 11B is a red aperture, 11C is a green aperture and 11D is a blue aperture. Thus as disk 12 goes through one revolution each of the photodetectors 1, 2, 3 and 4 sees successively black, red, green, blue components of the same line scan image.

Printers 1, 2, 3 and 4 are each capable of printing only one color. A multiplexing and thresholding logic 14 is then operative to switch the correct color scan signal to the printer for that color.
