Abstract

An automatic ribbon drop system is employed to improve print line visibility. The ribbon drop system is actuated a predetermined time period after the keying of a character, to enhance operator visibility of the print line. The predetermined time is adjusted by the operator in accordance with the operator's typing abilities.

Automatic Ribbon Drop System

An automatic ribbon drop system is employed to improve print line visibility. The ribbon drop system is actuated a predetermined time period after the keying of a character, to enhance operator visibility of the print line. The predetermined time is adjusted by the operator in accordance with the operator's typing abilities.

Some printers employ print ribbons 11 closely spaced from platen 13 making it difficult for the operator to view characters on the line being printed. Special logic is employed to effect the automatic lowering of the ribbon, thereby enhancing print line visibility. The logic is actuated a predetermined time after the keying of a character on keyboard 15. A manual adjusting mechanism 17 is operable to vary the time of the delay.

The generation of a signal by the logic causes the ribbon drop logic 19 to effect the lowering of the ribbon guides holding ribbon 11. The ribbon lift latch 21 is also set by the ribbon drop logic 19. Upon keying of the next character on keyboard 17, the ribbon lift latch 21 is reset thereby causing the ribbon guides to lift the ribbon 14. Additionally, print inhibit logic 23 is actuated preventing the printing of the next character until the ribbon 11 has been lifted to its print position.
