One advantage of Alternate Pathway Screen is the capability to place gravel across an openhole interval where the formation interval might contain shale sections or unstable hole sections. Although the gravel can be placed, there is the potential for intermixing of the permeable gravel pack sand / proppant with sloughing shale and or other formation fines. This could result in a pack that had a section downstream of the offending area that could be partially plugged. This partially plugged area could inhibit hydrocarbon production and potentially lead to screen cutting due to higher flow velocities through the adjacent screen section. One way to get around a bad area is to isolate it by placing a device or devices in the screen assembly that when activated will isolate the offending section. This allow placement of non-contaminated gravel across the productive openhole interval or in a cased hole interval.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION: The alternate path way screen may be concentric with multiple pathways between the outer shroud and internal abase pipe / flow conduit. The inflatable packer is spaced at the desired interval(s) one or more to isolate shale sections and or other hole problems. The inflatable packers are spaced between alternate pathway screens that have a non-perforate outer shroud and/or a non perforated inner pipe.
