Automatic Platen Indexing System

An automatic platen indexing system is employed to improve print line visibility. The platen indexing system is actuated a predetermined time period after the keying of a character, or in response to the depression of a special keybutton.

Some printers employ printing elements 11 closely spaced from platen 13 making it difficult for the operator to view characters on the line being printed. Special logic is employed to effect the automatic indexing of platen 13 carrying print receiving media 15 thereon, thereby causing the print line thereof to be visible. In one mode, this logic is actuated a predetermined time after the keying of a character on keyboard 17. A manual adjusting mechanism 19 is operable to vary the time of the delay. The generation of a signal by the logic causes the index logic 21 to effect the indexing of the platen 15 by a predetermined number of line space increments. The index logic also sets a reverse index latch 23. Upon keying of the next character on keyboard 17, the reverse index latch 23 is reset thereby causing the index mechanism to reverse index over the predetermined line space increments. Additionally, print inhibit logic 25 is actuated preventing the printing of the next character, until the index mechanism has returned the platen to the print line position.

In an alternate mode, a peak key 27 is employed. Operator depression of key 27 effects indexing by the predetermined amount. Release of the ke...
