Fabrication of Dual Layer Magnetic Disk

A magnetic disk is provided which enables servo and data information to be written on the same side of the disk using a single recording head.

The magnetic disk structure shown in the diagram is produced upon a glass disk by the following deposition steps.
1. Evaporate a metallizing layer of chromium - copper.
2. Electroplate a nonmagnetic 20 microinch layer of

nickel phosphorus, to impart a high H(C) to the

following servo layer.
3. Electroplate a magnetic servo layer of nickel-cobalt

phosphorus 5 microinch thick.
4. Electroplate a 5 microinch layer of gold to protect

the servo layer during the next deposition.
5. Electroplate a nonmagnetic separating layer of nickel

phosphorus 90 microinches thick.
6. Electroplate a 2 microinch layer of nickel-cobalt

phosphorus to provide a data recording layer.
