Ribbon Cartridge

A high-capacity tiltable ribbon cartridge permits operator view of printed material and reduces the need for ribbon changing.

In present daisy-wheel printers, the location of the print wheel, carrier, and ribbon relative to the print line obstructs an operator's view of text printed on the print line. Also, due to increased print speeds obtainable with such printers, the need for ribbon changing is increased.

In Fig. 1 there is shown a high-capacity ribbon cartridge 1 containing ribbon
2. Cartridge 1 has extensions 3 for maintaining portion 4 of ribbon 2 away from the main ribbon storage area 5. The reason for maintaining portion 4 away from area 5 is to accommodate print wheel 6 and carrier 7 of printer 8, shown in Fig. 2.

Cartridge 1 is tiltable in a counterclockwise direction about pivot 9 from a normal operating position to the position shown in dotted lines. Tilting of cartridge 1 is accomplished by actuation of magnet 10.

Tilting of cartridge 1 can be on a character basis or on a line basis to enable the operator to view text printed on a print line.
