Described is a counter mechanism for counting the number of chips contained in a helix storage tube.

A helix storage tube, comprising a drum 10 having wound thereon a length of C-shaped channel track 11 and previously loaded with chips 12, is mounted on a rotary motor 13 so that it may be rotated on its axis. The motor 13 is mounted on a stand 14 which also supports a motor controller 15, a display 16, and a post 17. This post 17 in turn supports a vertically slidable reader head 18 which is electrically connected to the display 16 by a wire 19. This head has a lip 20 adapted to engage the upper edge of the track 11 so that as the drum rotates the lip 20 will ride the upper edge, and thus the head 18 will be able to scan the entire length of track 11.

The head 18 is provided with a light source, not shown, and a pick up, not shown, for optically detecting the presence of each chip 12 stored in the track 11.
