A fluid stream can be modulated to produce droplets using volume changes in a magnetostrictive element.

A length of wire 3 of a suitable alloy, such as 30% nickel-iron, is enclosed in a containing tube 5, having a nozzle 7 at one end thereof. A connecting tube or hose 9 is attached at the other end of tube 5, to supply ink flow in the direction shown by the arrow. Surrounding tube 5 is an exciting or driving coil 11, connected to a suitable source of electrical energy. Energization of coil 11 causes volume changes in the rod or wire 3, thereby modulating the stream issuing from nozzle 7, to form droplets.
