Pneumatic Stepping Motor

Described is a pneumatic stepping motor that is driven by compressed air. It is safe in combustible and hazardous environments. It is also useful in stepping motor applications that require small, discrete shaft increments.

Fig. 1 shows a pair of diaphragms 2 that alternately push on both sides of a bell crank lever 4. The oscillating rotary motion of the bell crank 4 is converted to pure rotary motion by two overrunning conventional clutches 6 and an output shaft 8 that are attached to the bell crank 4. The bell crank stroke is controlled by adjustable stops 10. Fluidic controls are used to start, stop, and run the motor.

Fig. 2 shows a fluidic flip-flop that alternates the compressed gas which is fed to the diaphragm chamber during motor operation. Fig. 1 shows the motor in an active stroke (the output shaft 8 and clutch 6 are engaged).
