When text is keyed into and stored into a memory such as for a printer or printer system and where the text is to be grouped by pages of output, it is desirable to have page separation codes which cannot be removed from the memory. It is also desirable that the text data may be inserted between the page separation codes.

One approach to this is to provide in a random-access memory a section of text storage as a fixed number of page separation codes. As text is inserted into the random-access memory, the characters are inserted between the appropriate separators.

As each page is filled and the storage is incremented such as to provide the insertion of the characters in the subsequent gaps between page separation codes, the entire subject may be inserted. When a page locate operation is accomplished, the data following the page separation code will then be accessed.

Should deletions be made to completely delete a particular page of data or text, the page separation code will remain and subsequent pages will be retained in their previous order but separated by a gap. This prevents the telescoping of the data into the now vacant page location, and subsequent confusion when it is desired to access a particular page for corrections or deletion. Thus, with nondeletable page separation, the operation of the memory by the operator through keyboard control is greatly simplified.
