Rack switching on this system utilizes a switch cam 10, a switch follower 12, an electromagnet and latch 14, a linkage 20, and bail 16 to impart a translating motion to the rack 18.

The switch follower 12 incorporates a face cam follower 12' which follows the face cam 10'. When in the restored position, as shown, the magnet latch 14 retains the follower 12 in this position until the latch is picked. In this mode the surface cam follower 12'' is in line with its cam 10'. During the cycle the cam will rotate the follower 12'' to the rear of the view. This motion is transmitted to bail 16 through the link 20. The rack 18 is mounted on a shaft 16' in the bail 16 and thus receives its translating motion.

The bail 16 engages a toggle spring 22 with a member 24 which maintains engagement between the rack 18 and pinion 19 on whichever side it is switched. The system will stay in this mode until the magnet latch 14 is picked. When the latch is picked 14, the follower 12' will follow the face cam 10'. This brings the other surface cam follower 12''' in line with its cam 10'''.

The rotating motion of the follower 12 is now reversed, thus engaging the rack 18 on the opposite side. At the end of the cycle the face cam 10' restores the follower 12 to the latched position.
