Abstract

Fig. 1 shows a cartridge in which a strip 1 of flexible material, incorporating a magnetic recording layer, is attached at its ends to relatively stiff nonmagnetic backing sheet 2 and flap 3. Flap 3 is hinged to sheet 2 so that it can be moved to a first outwardly pointing position in which strip 1 is drawn flat against sheet 2. In this position, strip 1, sheet 2 and flap 3 may be contained wholly within an envelope 4. Partial removal of sheet 2 from envelope 4 allows flap 3 to drop as shown so that strip 1 forms a loop.

Magnetic Strip Cartridge for Rotating Head File

Fig. 2 shows the fully extended loop of strip 1 placed over a rotating magnetic head drum 5, with the flap 3 now pointing inwardly and being held against the underside of sheet 2 by fingers, not shown. The envelope 4 and sheet 2 are located in a carriage mechanism 6 movable laterally on guide rails 7, to place different longitudinal tracks on strip 1 in transducing relation with the rotating head 5. Correct positioning of the mechanism is achieved by a light source 8, grating 9 and photocell 10.

In the arrangement of Fig. 2 pinch rollers, not shown, may be used to draw sheet 2 out of envelope 4 prior to the strip 1 being placed over head drum 5.

A modified form of the Fig. 1 cartridge, not shown, has a duplicate flap and magnetic strip on the upper face of sheet 2 thereby doubling capacity.
