Abstract

A servo-controlled typewriter ribbon take-up device insures a tightly wrapped ribbon at the take-up spool. The device is force sensitive and not torque sensitive, thereby being useful to control ribbon wrap regardless of ribbon spool diameter.

Servo Controlled Typewriter Ribbon Take Up Device

A servo-controlled typewriter ribbon take-up device insures a tightly wrapped ribbon at the take-up spool. The device is force sensitive and not torque sensitive, thereby being useful to control ribbon wrap regardless of ribbon spool diameter.

Ribbon tension servo 11 11 is responsive to ribbon tension. When ribbon tension is low, drive clutch 12 attached to drive gear 13 (free to rotate on take-up spool shaft 14) engages take-up spool hub 15 which, in turn, controls the take-up spool drive 13 causing the take-up spool 17 to wrap the ribbon tightly.

If ribbon tension is high, ribbon tension servo arm 11 moves forcing the control brake 19 to wrap tighter around control sleeve 21. Control sleeve 21 is braked and acts as a disengagement sleeve for drive clutch 12, thereby reducing the drive to take-up spool 17. The sequence maintains an equilibrium dependent upon ribbon tension as sensed by the ribbon tension servo arm 11.
