Abstract

This mechanism moves an object (e.g., a microfiche card) in two directions within a single plane to a precisely specified X-Y coordinate location. The mechanism contains two indexing wheels, each having a circular camming surface. The dimensions of the camming eccentrics are determined by the size of the object (i.e., the microfiche card) to be transported, and the total distance that the microfiche card is to be moved.

Precision Transporting and Locating Mechanism

This mechanism moves an object (e.g., a microfiche card) in two directions within a single plane to a precisely specified X-Y coordinate location. The mechanism contains two indexing wheels, each having a circular camming surface. The dimensions of the camming eccentrics are determined by the size of the object (i.e., the microfiche card) to be transported, and the total distance that the microfiche card is to be moved.

The microfiche card is suspended within a number of upper and lower positioning rollers, and is contained by the positioning rollers between the two indexing wheels. The upper positioning rollers are controlled by the upper indexing wheel, suspending the microfiche card. These rollers do not extend into the lower indexing wheel. Conversely, the lower positioning rollers support and contain the microfiche card, but do not extend into the upper indexing wheel. Accordingly, by rotating either of the indexing wheels, the microfiche card will be moved the "X" or "Y" direction with respect to a fixed point. The card, itself, is transported between the positioning rollers so that the upper indexing wheel will move it in the X direction, whereas the lower indexing wheel will move the microfiche card in the Y direction.
