Abstract

This hand-held stylus is capable of optically reading printed lines, such as a bar code, and printing alphanumeric characters. The bar code could contain an address for obtaining stored information from a computer, which information is printed out by the same stylus that did the reading.

This hand-held stylus is capable of optically reading printed lines, such as a bar code, and printing alphanumeric characters. The bar code could contain an address for obtaining stored information from a computer, which information is printed out by the same stylus that did the reading.

The hand-held stylus 10, shown in Fig. 1, contains an optical read head 12 and an electroerosion print head 14. The stylus has the capability of reading conventional bar codes and printing related information on aluminum coated paper.

The illustration, shown in Fig. 1, shows a package being labeled. The operator has read the preprinted bar code with the optical (or magnetic) wand. The information is recognized by the computer system and labeling data is forwarded to the stylus 10 for label completion. The paper or label utilized is not only aluminum coated but contains evenly spaced parallel lines, which are sensed by the reader optics and establish a print rate for the stylus. Of course, the print rate is a function of the rate at which the operator moves the stylus 10 across the label containing the parallel lines.

Since the electroerosion process consists of burning a great number of closely spaced spots on the special paper to form the printout character, it can be appreciated that the stylus can provide any print type, technical or foreign language, that can be created by the computer.

The stylus 10 housing is constructed of plastic and is configured to sup...
