Reclamation of EPON Coated Core Planes Arrays

A process for the reclamation of EPON*-hardened memory planes and/or arrays is presented. EPON/AROCLOR** coating for ferrite cores on aging loses its ability to dampen magnetostrictive oscillations in cores, resulting in unacceptable electrical noise signals.

The loss of coating constituents during aging leaves a hard, brittle and glossy material behind which is characterized by high-gloss transition temperatures (T(g), 86 degrees F). The ambient temperature being below the T(g) of t the EPON/AROCLOR coating, leads to external core stress each time the BSM (Basic Storage Memory) is power-cycled between room ambient and machine operating temperatures (95-120 degrees F).

Memory arrays containing EPON/AROCLOR-coated cores can be made functional by subjecting the arrays to the following: SOFT & SEAL Process:
Softening Formulation - 85% monochlorobenzene. 15% N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone.

Seal Formulation - 0.1% decafluorohexylmethacrylate resin in 99.9% FREON-113***

(1,1,2 - trichloro -1,2,2

trifluoroethane).

PROCEDURE:
1. Immerse array in softening formulation (30 minutes).
2. Drain array for one minute.
3. Immerse array in softening formulation - withdraw array when evolvement of air bubbles subside.
4. Drain and air dry array for 20 minutes.
5. Immerse array in seal formulation (30 seconds).
6. Drain and air dry array for 15 minutes.
7. Repeat step 5.
8. Repeat step 6.
