Dual Radius Contour Generator

A dual-radius contour is lapped on the surface of a magnetic head.

The head contour is defined by dual radii fixed by two rocking axes. The head surface is brought into contact with an abrasive lapping trough and then, in effect, is simultaneously rocked in two transverse directions to form a dual-radius contour.

A downfeed mechanism brings the head surface into contact with the trough and continues to maintain contact during abrasion. The head is rocked about the head rocking axis by a head rocking motor to form the head contour in one direction. A trough rocking motor rocks the trough about the trough rocking axis to form the head contour in another direction. A lap feed motor reciprocates the head along the lapping trough to obtain even abrasion.
