Xerographic Process

It is conventional practice in a xerographic process to utilize corona-like devices to coat a surface with an electrical charge. For example, a charge corona is utilized to charge the photoconductor before imaging and before cleaning. Likewise, a transfer corona is used to effect transfer of the photoconductor's toned image to a sheet of paper.

It has been found that with certain environmental conditions which may exist within a xerographic copier, electromagnetic energy may be emitted from these devices and/or the power supplies and conductors associated therewith.

A solution to this problem is the use of a carbon conductor, resistive insulated cable between the corona's high voltage power supply and the corona device. This cable greatly reduces the amount of noise radiated from sources, such as arcing within the power supply or the natural corona effects of conductors and wires which carry high voltage, particularly high voltage alternating current. A typical cable of this type has a resistance of approximately 10,000 ohms per foot.
