Abstract

The PNP off-chip driver circuit depicted in the drawing has the drive capability of an emitter-follower but exhibits improved uplevels and downlevels at output node A. The uplevel will drive directly into an internal logic circuit diode D3 and transistor T3, thus eliminating the requirement for a level translating off-chip receive circuit.

PNP Universal Driver

The PNP off-chip driver circuit depicted in the drawing has the drive capability of an emitter-follower but exhibits improved uplevels and downlevels at output node A. The uplevel will drive directly into an internal logic circuit diode D3 and transistor T3, thus eliminating the requirement for a level translating off- chip receive circuit.

Ample base drive for transistor T2 is provided by transistor T1 and resistor R3 to produce full output capability with medium and low beta PNP transistors. The down transition at node A, when T2 is off, may be clamped by optional diode D4, or limited by Thevinized terminator resistors R4 and R5.

The inverted collector drive characteristic and large voltage transition capability at the output of transistor T2 is also suitable for technology interface applications.
