Ceramic Green Sheet Thickness Light Gauging System

This gauging system is adapted to measure the thickness of a liquid layer of ceramic material by a noncontact technique after it is doctor bladed.

The system shown in the figure consists of a constant-current source module 10 that is used to regulate the power input to the light-emitting diode module 12, that is positioned above the doctor bladed liquid ceramic layer 14 supported on a MYLAR* belt 15.

A photodiode module 16 is positioned below the liquid ceramic layer 14 and belt 15 opposite the light-emitting diode module 12, in a position adapted to receive the transmitted light thereof. The photodiode electrical power output signal from diode 16 is inputted into a power monitor 18, which amplifies the signal and inputs it into a digital readout module 20.

In operation, the attenuation of the light energy from module 12 provides an indication of the thickness of the liquid ceramic layer 14 which is read out on meter 20. * Trademark of E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.
