Question Selection in a Map

A method is provided for selecting questions to be used in a maintenance analysis procedure (MAP) which facilitates isolating the cause of a machine malfunction. The method utilizes the duration to answer the various questions and the failure rates of the involved failure elements to chose one of the various questions for a step in the procedure.

Each repair action contains one or more failure elements. Each failure element represents a machine malfunction, and has a failure rate. Each question has a duration, a 'yes' answer, and a 'no' answer. A machine malfunction generates a particular answer set to the question set. The failure rate at a MAP step is the summation of the failure rates of the failure elements at that step.

The question selection method calculates a weight for each of the various questions at a given step of the MAP, and selects the question with the largest weight. The weight is a function of the question duration, of the resultant weighted average (by the failure rate) portion of repair actions eliminated following the question, and of the resultant portion of the total failure rate that flows down the yes and no answers to the questions.
