To provide increased throughput in a conventional impact printer, it would be advantageous to have a means for feeding a second sheet automatically following the completion of printing on a first sheet.

An overlapped paper handling system which allows an operator to insert a second sheet in the typewriter while the first sheet is still in the machine can provide this function. Referring to the drawing, in order for the operator to be able to insert a sheet while the first sheet is still in the machine, a means must be provided to prevent the second sheet from dropping to the rear feed rolls 1 and being fed into the platen area with the first sheet. The gate 2 which is located above the stackers 3 and rear feed rolls 1 accomplishes this.

The sheet is aligned by a registration device, not shown, as it drops from the gate 2 to the stackers 3. A 0.30 to 0.40 inch spacing between the bottom paper plate 4 and the platen 5 is required for registration. Therefore, the rear feed rolls 1 must be moved away from the platen 5 this distance to allow registration. The rear feed rolls 1 are activated independently of the front feed rolls 6 such that this movement of the rear feed rolls can be accomplished.
