In systems which transport both envelopes and sheets past a common print station, it is desirable to stack the envelopes in one hopper and the sheets in another to assure proper stacking. That is, the hoppers can be made or adjusted to the desired size to prevent uneven stacking.

For design simplicity, the envelope hopper may be positioned such that envelopes exit at right angles to the sheet or paper exit path. For instance, an envelope travelling a path described by arrows 1 would be sensed in the area indicated by arrow 2 and the controller would cause the envelope to exit at a right angle relative to path 1.

Since the exact position of the envelope at the point of pick cannot be precisely predicted, its entry into the stacker is variable. Also in the event the envelope is slightly skewed at the point of pick, this skew would cause the envelope to fishtail causing jams and stacking problems.

These problems may be corrected through use of the device shown which includes a gate 3. The envelope contacts gate finger 4 at point 5. When it reaches point 6 it has raised the gate to position 7. Since distance D is greater than the width of the widest envelope, when the trailing edge passes point 6 the gate will restore to position 8. In this position, surface 9 forms a barrier in the front of the leading edge of the envelope. Surface 9 now describes the desired path into the stacker.
